About Idanha

The City of Idanha’s roots run deep in Oregon’s timber country. In 1937, the community established its first post office, marking an important step in formal settlement and connection to the surrounding region. By 1947, residents had organized a local fire department—demonstrating the town’s commitment to safety and neighborly care.

The year 1949 was especially significant. The Idanha Country Church was founded, becoming a cornerstone of community life, and later that same year the City of Idanha was officially incorporated, solidifying its place as a recognized municipality in the state of Oregon.

For decades, timber played a central role in the local economy and identity. In 1997, the town experienced a major transition when its last timber mill closed, marking the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter for the community.

Today, Idanha honors its hardworking past while continuing to build on the strong foundations laid by its early residents.

Fueled by extreme winds and dry conditions, the fire rapidly spread through the Santiam Canyon, destroying homes, businesses, and entire communities along Highway 22. Towns like Detroit, Idanha, and Mill City were heavily impacted. The fire led to widespread evacuations, tragic loss of life, and long-term economic and environmental damage. In the years since, the region has focused on rebuilding, forest restoration, and strengthening wildfire preparedness.
